Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Big Leap Design was started in 2008, but brings 12 years of experience to the business.
What is your primary product or service?
Our primary services include website design, search engine optimization and traditional Graphic design. The majority of our clients fall into one of three categories:
1. They are in need of a website. Many of our clients are small business owners looking to have a reputable web presence, without breaking the bank. We begin with either a custom website design, where we create a look that is unique and all their own. Or, we can use a template design. The advantages of a template design are that it is more cost effective and is a way to get a site up and running in a short amount of time. Either way, the end result is a professional, engaging and useful website.
2. They have a website that isn't generating any business for them. First, we start with a free evaluation of their website - both the outward appearance, as well as the "behind the scenes" aspect. We then provide them with our expert SEO and/or design recommendations as to what can be done to improve their search engine positions and conversion rate.
3. They are in need of professional graphic design in the creation of logos, brochures, postcards, promotional novelties and newsletters, just to name a few. We can take care of everything, from creative design all the way through the print process.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My name is Melissa DeSousa, and I'm the owner of Big Leap Design. BLD came to fruition after 11 years experience working for a similar type of company, providing graphic and website design. I began at entry level and quickly gained the knowledge and skills required to oversee all operations of the business.
During that time, I also became interested in Search Engine Optimization and the endless business possibilities the internet had to offer. I became so interested and skilled at SEO, that I began providing SEO services for the company I was employed by. By 2008, I felt that I had outgrown the particular company I had been working for, and and knew that I could offer a better and more personal quality of service, at affordable prices.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
That's simple - We give the client more than they expected.
We do the seemingly impossible. We have been known to work nights and weekends to complete a project that has a tight deadline. No matter the budget, we'll find a way to work within that budget and still fulfill the main objective.
It's the little things that really matter. It's the personal attention and understanding of our clients wants and needs. It's going the extra mile for our client because we know their business could benefit from something we can provide - even though it wasn't in their budget. We know that our clients will remember the value we provided, and won't hesitate to refer others to BLD, or call us in for their next project - even after they've grown into that big successful business!
Being a small business, we understand the needs and concerns other small businesses have. We realize there are so many bells and whistles offered out there, it's hard to know where to start. We can help with that. We can break it all down into simple, understandable terms and come up with a plan that puts the client first.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We actually work from multiple locations - our homes! This used to be something that was looked upon as strange or "un-business-like"...but these days, it's almost the norm.
We have a team of professionals with years of experience all communicating and working from our home offices. Sure, someday, it might be nice to get us all together in an office. But for now, it works, and...it keeps the overhead down, which in turn, keeps our clients costs down.
Where do we hold meetings? Over a great hot cup'o joe at a comfortable coffee shop like Starbucks or Panera Bread. Or, we're always happy to visit a client at their office location.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept Business & Personal Checks, Money Orders, Cash or Credit/Debit Cards via Paypal
Which areas do you service?
We services both locally and nationally. Across the street or across the country, the internet makes providing project updates, job proofs and communication a snap.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm, excluding holidays
Evening and weekend appointments are available
